My conclusion is that the correction is best performed by the fill light function. I take Gerry's point that the exposure and fill light functions are different, but in ACD See both seem to move the histogram to the right and both affect the highlights. My main concern was to perform the correction in a way which does not produce unwanted noise. I am heartened to see that other ACDSee users have the same problem in that the program reads the embedded JPEG correctly but for some reason seems to produce a darkened image when the RAW file is loaded. In the end, the only things that matter are the people we help and the people we hurt. The saying: garbage in, garbage out is an exageration, but there is some truth in it. This may not appeal to the majority, who it appears want to shoot everyting in auto, then do all the PP in manual.

I continue to test trial versions of new software and have a suspicion tha DXO may eventually replace ACDSee, but it is what works best for me now. I do all conversions and crops in the Browser, all minor JPEG adjustments in ACDSee and (rarely) any trickery in PS. Like you, I still use PS occasionally for complicated things too, so I've migrated to a sort of three-program system.įirst of all, I try to get the image right, or as close as possible, at time of capture and keep computer play to a minimum. Nevertheless, I still find the Pentax Browser best for initial crops and conversions. It is so good, in fact, that I always reprocess older JPEGs originally done in PS before sending them out for publication. It has become my main program for processing JPEGs, because it tends to understand, maintain and enhance the Pentax look more than any program.

For years, I always reverted to Photoshop, until I tested ACDSee.

I download and test PP software packages on a regular basis. There's some sort of sliding scale for how much brightening is applied to the intermediates.

In ACR 100% Fill Light gives something like 2 stops brightness to the darkest point, so using the same (say) 6.3 stop difference to start with the bright point would stay the same but the dark point would now be only 4.3 stops darker. If the dark point is (say) 6.3 stops darker than the white point in the original image it is still 6.3 stops darker after you alter exposure (assuming, of course, that you don't go too far and clip anything).įill Light brightens up the dark areas without really affecting the bright ones. Miles - I don't use ACDSee so I can't be certain if it's the same, but in ACR Exposure and Fill Light work differently.Įxposure just moves the whole histogram left or right depending which way you move the slider.

Is this because the default setting for Pentax RAW files is just wrong? I am never quite sure how to correct the darkening - either by increasing exposure or by increasing the fill light and I am uncertain whether these two tools do the same thing. My problem with ACDSee's raw converter is that all my PEFS or DNGs come out rather dark in the default setting, whereas JPEGS appear to be perfectly exposed.
